I had to work with experienced but low-tech translators who didn't use (and didn't want to use) a CAT-tool. You just can't get them to do that, and there is not enough work for litterature-only translators. Solutions:
- for Word documents: the most convenient way was to pretranslate the document with WF Classic, hide the original text in the pretranslated version and send both to the translator (original version + pretranslated version), and to say them to open both side by side in two different windows. And then to work on the pretranslated version. After receiving the completed work, you'll only have to check it and then to clean it in the TM.
- another way is to copy all segments into Excel, if necessary pretranslate, and then having them working on this Excel sheet. (although they won't like it).
- alignment after translation is also an option, but only if no TM has to be used.
- last option: let them work in the way they want, but give them a TM in Excel which can be used as a reference (by using the Search option).
