Hi everyone,

I am starting a new job, the company uses the Chrome OS operating system. I am the in-house translator and they asked me to create the translation department and suggest CAT tools and other programs I might need.

I was gonna give MemoQ a try but the issue is I just realized they run everyone on Chrome OS.

Can you please help me with some efficient CAT tools that are compatible with that.

File extensions : Docs, ppt, excel, pdf
Would love to have : MT
Number of users : 1

Thank you!

I know of no CAT tool that runs on Chrome OS. As far as I know, Chrome OS doesn't even have Java (so e.g. OmegaT is also out of the question). This means that you're going to have to use online tools.
- Wordfast Anywhere (WFA): Free to use (with some restrictions), can connect to e.g. Google Translate.
- MemSource Personal: Free to use (with some restrictions) (paid version is $30 per month), has a built-in machine translator.
- MateCat: Free to use, can connect to e.g. Google Translate.
- SmartCat: Free to use, can connect to e.g. Google Translate.

To compact a gigantic memory, exported as TMX from Studio, I'd like to remove all properties, e.g.:

What is the best way to do this?

Open it in a Unicode-aware text editor and do a regex find/replace operation.

There is a Mac ]on your desk, so perhaps ]this page provides such a text editor.

The simplest way would be to search for something like changeid=".+?" and replace with nothing (the Find field's regex syntax may differ from editor to editor). Or, if you want to assume that the "lang" attribute is always at the start of the TUV tag (which is 99% true), you can search for e.g. (<tuv lang=".+?")(.+?)(>) and replace it with e.g. $1$3 (again the syntax may differ from program to program).

Along these lines I was thinking indeed, hoping, however, an even simpler solution would exist :).

Thank you for your suggestion!

I've tested Maxprogram's TMXEditor:

You can use Heartsome Tmx Editor to export your Tmx file as an excel file and then reimport it again into Heartsome creating a Tmx file again without any properties. It's very easy.

With Heartsome, you don't even need to convert tmx into Excel or anything else. Just open your tmx, clear all attributes and apply to the entire TMX file.

Bad luck as Heartsome does not run under Catalina.

When you open a tmx file with Heartsome, an Attributes Editor pane displays on the right. You can add, edit or delete the attributes one by one: choose the first unwanted attrubute (by clicking), then delete with 'Whole file/TM' radio button selected; choose the second unwanted attrubute, then delete with 'Whole file/TM' radio button selected; etc.

Googling gets me two "Heartsome" profiles on GitHub, one being "Heartsome TMX Editor" and the other "Heartsome Studio", but I'm not sure if they're the same thing or two different things. I downloaded the TMX editor in 2014 (not sure from where, though). I uploaded it ]here for 7 days (I'm not sure how many people can download it). It's 620 MB and contains HSTMXEditor 8.0.1 for Linux (32&64 bit), Mac (32&64 bit) and Windows (32&64 bit, with and without JRE. The "without JRE" version doesn't work for me, but I suspect it may be because my own installed version of Java is too new for it.

Hello Wolfgang,

Here you have all what you need :

Remeber that the HSTMEditor version must correspond to your OS version. Otherwise it doesn't work.

Also, if you are not sure whther you have Java installed on your machine, choose the version ending with JRE.

A big Thanks to you guys, Samuel, Adrian and Stepan. I downloaded Win_x86_JRE version and it works in my Windows 10.
@Samuel: as expected those versions for Mac do not work or I would have to install Java 6 which I tried unsuccessfully. So I'll content myself with the Windows version and can definitely forget about TMX Editor.

As I understand, LibreOffice can be used under ChromeOS. So, try Anaphraseus. It is the only thing that comes to my mind (except for SaaS solutions). And it will work with text documents only.

No, the Fuzzy Lookup add-on in Excel compares two tables and tries to match data from the one table to data in the other table. It does not (and can't) match cells from within a single table (i.e. a single list of sentences) to each other.

Post title: Yet another useless online CAT tool

I could list all the reasons why this tool is useless, but I think it's enough to say that there is no way to quickly and easily look for a term in the TM. I thought it was obvious for everyone that this is one of the main features of CAT tools. This should be a clearly visible window, and the function should be accessible with 1 shortcut or possibly one click, but that's all. Ergonomy, guys, do you know what this means ? I'm sorry but this makes this tool unusable in a professional context.

In short: this tool is among those that will waste your time. Don't bother if you have a choice.

Poster: user_3042476

Hello everyone and my first post here. A little background... I have been doing some translation work for decades as part of my work in Sales & Marketing. Although this was by no means a major part of my work. A year ago I started as a freelance with 3 different industries with a fixed set of customers. I enjoy this work and work mainly with Word docs and some online tools for help and verifications (DeepL, Google Translate).

About 6 months ago one of my customer started using Memsource (I had not been aware of CAT tools until then). I don't know exactly why but Memsource leaves me underwhelmed - I end up exporting the document into word and upload it back when done.

I would welcome your suggestions if you have had the opportunity to test various CAT Tools. I like my work to be focused on the text rather than be confused with a myriad of options, tools, widgets and a busy screen. Since I work in different industries (some very technical) I would like whatever CAT Tool I choose to have a very robust Term and glossary feature. In some industries, one term may have 2 or more definition depending on its application/context etc... Therefore, I'd like to store and manage multiple definitions to one term if possible.

I have looked but not tested the following and leaving my thoughts to see if I can get your input:

Wordfast: Watched some Youtube videos. Correct me if I'm wrong but it feels like a Win95 application

Déjà-vu : I liked what I saw but looking deeper it looks like development has stopped since the original owner passed away. This was further strengthened on their web site as the X4 version button brings you to the X3 page with no updated info on X4. All the videos are many years old. So I dont have a good feeling.

SDL: Looks very strong in TM but has a steep price and learning curve it seems.

SmartCat: Has many good reviews on this site but many mention it is light in features and focus on market place (jobs) which is not a selling point for me at this time.

As you can see, I want my cake and eat it too! I want a clean UI / Interface with a strong set of tools. I am willing to pay for the tool but if someone has a good suggesting for a free version so much the better... I would rather PC based than cloud based but since I use many cloud based apps anyway, its not a deal killer.

I know many of these apps offer a 30 days trial. Since I am doing this part time, I cannot afford the time to test all the CAT tools out there to settle on one. This is why I would like to ask the experts here on this site.

Thanks again for your input
