Post title: The one that suits you

I have used Trados through many versions, and it has improved enormously since the early Workbench versions. The 'annual subscription' or PSMA is worth every cent in my opinion. I have tried Wordfast Classic many years ago and looked at MemoQ some years back, but came back to Trados/Studio because I prefer the glossary function, Multiterm.
It is now easy to work with the basic glossary functions using a free app.

There are free demos for most CAT tools. Spend some time trying one or two, or if possible, ask a colleague who has the full version to let you see it in action. (It is often easier for a beginner to start in the middle of a project, and then you can better understand the options for setting up and the other functions as you need them.)

Which CAT you prefer may depend on your work routines and approach to translation - if you never use the advanced features anyway, then a simpler and cheaper CAT is probably fine. You may have to learn how to convert files and packages to the formats your clients request, but the CATs are supposed to be more or less compatible.

Using a CAT when you have to think constantly about the 'mechanics' is tiring and distracting, so go for the CAT you feel most comfortable with, and learn the short-cuts and routines, so that they come as naturally to you as typing. Otherwise the quality of your translation may suffer.

I have reached a point where I simply tell clients 'my CAT or no CAT' - but that is not always easy for a beginner, I know. I can still translate without a CAT, but most of my clients can handle Trados Studio, and most actually prefer it.

That said, if you prefer Wordfast or MemoQ, or any other CAT, go for it. YOU are the one who will be working with it for many long days in your career!

Clients are NOT always right - they pay you to be the expert on your side of the business!

Yes, you can download and upload the translation files as XLIFF (depending on how your client set up your permissions). You may have to spend some time in the online system, however, doing e.g. the QA checks. Also, while you can download all files at once, you can only upload one file at a time. AFAIK you can't download TMs and glossaries.
You CAN download TMs and glossaries but only if the client or whoever it was that created the project sets it up this way. In the past I have asked clients to send me TMs in TMX format and they have been able to do this from Wordbee, so there is compatibility there, too.

I don't personally find Wordbee that much of a chore. You can customise the keyboard shortcuts so that makes it a little more user friendly. I don't like using it for large jobs or urgent jobs but in those cases I simply download the XLIFF and work in my own CAT software. The QA checks do not take a long time and are easy to navigate, so again, I wouldn't consider that to be a huge chore. Although speed and performance, I imagine, will also depend on the client's server and not necessarily Wordbee on its own.

Simply put, it's not the perfect tool but you can work with it or use the compatibility features without too many headaches. At least that has been my experience.

Verifika Quality Assurance and no Support AT ALL

Poster: SamanthaBreu

It's been 4 months I trying to use Verifika and I can't. It used to work fine and now I receive a message "A debugger has been running..."
I included it in my antivirus exceptions list, I changed the configuration of my firewall and I only can make it open in the sandbox, but after open it closes sudenly or if it works I receive the message "Cannot process the report".

I'm trying to reach the support, I sent emails, I post on Facebook, I wrote on the little box of "support" in their website and nobody answers me.
But I PAID for a licence and now I cannot use the software and there's nobody to help me.

I simply dont know what to do anymore, I cannot simply forget this sofware and pay for X-bench because I already paid for the licence and I have the right to use it.

I'm becoming desperate and really angry for being ignored for their "support".

I thank in advance for any help or advice.

Leaving aside the quality of support, this error is not specific to Verifika. Make a Google search for this error, and maybe you will find the solution.

Also, if you are using AVG as an antivirus, maybe better change it to some other program as it causes many problems.

Hi Mara, I find your post very interesting because I'm evaluating the chance to use an Ipad Pro as main device. I basically work on marketing, retail and tourism and transcreations therefore I rarely use cat tools. I've used wordfast anywhere in the past and it would be great to use it on the ipad. Are you still using it? Do you still have issues with that?

I search all the internet and I tried every single thing people told me to try, but nothing except get rid of your antivirus and let your computer without one seems to solve the problem. I dont use AVG, I use Avast, but simply nothing works.

But the quality of support is important yes, cause the licence is not cheap and people need to know that after paying there's no support if the software didnt work as it should.

I also use Avast and Verifika, and at some point I started getting weird messages and crashes (with Verifika, not my computer). Eventually it did get fixed, so I can confirm that there is not an intrinsic problem with running the two programs on one machine.

I just checked my Avast settings and under "General > Exclusions" I have "Verifika.exe", "Verifika\Libraries\Presentation.dll" and "Verifika\ComHost.exe".

I know when I started having problems, I had to add these exclusions and that seemed to fix it. If that doesn't work, I would try uninstalling Verifika and then re-installing it, and then adding exclusions for it to Avast if any messages pop up.

LogiTerm as a single search + pre-translation interface to manage ALL terminology and TMs

Topic: LogiTerm as a single search + pre-translation interface to manage ALL terminology and TMs
Poster: Michael Joseph Wdowiak Beijer

Since I just wrote quite a big post over in the DVX mailing list about LogiTerm, which might interest people here, I will copy/paste it here.

LogiTerm is interesting because it can be used as a single search and/or pre-translation interface to manage all of your terminology and translation memories, and can be used nicely alongside a normal CAT tool.

Anyway, without further ado, here is the post (which is taken from ):

############################################################################
WARNING: THE FOLLOWING WAS DICTATED (IN A HURRY); ENTER AT YOUR OWN RISK!
############################################################################

This is how I use LogiTerm these days:

## Terminology ##
I use the Terminology feature to keep track of all my glossaries/termbases, both my own, those I find online, and those of clients. Note that I don't use LogiTerm to do any actual translating, so do not use the Terminology feature of LogiTerm when translating inside Word.

Every time I come across a new glossary or termbase, I quickly add a ‘Module’ in Logiterm's Terminology area. I then quickly convert the file via: Terminology > Convert > Tab-delimited to LogiTerm, and add it to the module, and index the module.

## Bitexts ##
I use LogiTerm’s Bitexts function to keep track of my ever-growing, massive collection of translation memories, in .tmx format. I have been collecting Dutch>English translation memories for years now, from all over the place: online, from clients, my own, from friends and colleagues, etc. Over the years, I came to realize that the only tool that could handle such a large database of translation memories (for searching, i.e.), was TMLookup ( ). I still love this tool, and it is absolutely amazing, but at some point I discovered that LogiTerm can do everything TMLookup can do, and a whole lot more. Of course, LogiTerm is quite expensive, whereas TMLookup is free, but it is well worth the money.

Anyway, back to the point. Every time I come across a new translation memory, I convert into it a .tmx file and save it in a specially named folder in my Memories folder. I then create a specific Module for it in LogiTerm's Bitexts database, using the exact same name as in my folder structure. This allows me to do various things. First of all, while translating I can easily search all of my past translation memories, and quickly drill down through specific clients, subjects, etc. For example, I can run a quick search across ALL of them, or only the client I am translating something for today.

But there's more. When setting up every new translation project, I run:

Pretranslation > LogiTrans

This allows me to pre-translate my current docs against my massive TMX database, or only parts of it. Since my EU TMX collection is vast, which would cause the pre-translation function to take forever, plus not all of it is relevant, I uslly run LogiTrans on a relevant subset of my complete collection. For example, this morning I started on a set of technical specifications about a solar farm, so I could LogiTrans safely disable all kinds of TMX's that are irrelevant. Once LogiTrans is finished, I have a quick look at the analysis files (showing a wealth of data on any useful matches), and then convert the resulting .xml file into a .tmx, via:

Bitexts > Convert > LogiTrans data (LT.xml) to Translation Memory (TMX)

I then import this .tmx file into my CAT tool project, whether this is DVX3, CafeTran, Studio 2017, or memoQ 8.2, depending on which tickles my fancy today ;-)

This system is one of the best ways I can think of to ensure that I will never miss a potentially useful match in a translation memory hidden somewhere on my computer, without slowing down my CAT tool to a crawl, which is what happens in most CAT tools if you try to work with translation memory databases that are too big.

As I'm sure you are already aware, the ability to search across ALL of my translation memories, on the one hand, and all my glossaries/termbases on the other hand, from a single, well-designed search interface is invaluable.

While using LogiTerm, I also soon realized that the more you try to work with many different Modules, and name them logically and carefully, the better the tool works when searching. In the past I have also experimented with throwing everything in one big module, e.g., which has the benefit of taking less time to set up, but if you split your data across all manner of different categories, clients, etc., it is obviously much more useful later on down the line.

Having said that, I also have a few special Modules, which I use especially to dump massive, unstructured collections into. This allows me to quickly create a huge module (which I can use to Pretranslate with), without having to waste any time on setting it up. Since individual Modules are so easy to select and deselect, when searching and/or pre-translating, the possibilities are endless!

Michael

PS: I don't work for Terminotix. just a happy customer. ;-)

Btw, in case anyone reading this is interested, apparently we will soon be getting our own Terminotix products forum here on Proz under

This is great news, as they offer a bunch of very interesting and powerful tools:

Their better known tools:

• LogiTerm: A full-service computer-assisted translation tool for language services teams and freelancers.
• AlignFactory: An automated document alignment software with Webcrawler.
• YouAlign: online (free) aligner. limited, but based on their industry leading AlignFactory engine
• SynchroTerm: An automated bilingual term extraction tool.
• WeBiText (sadly, no longer available)

Perhaps not yet so well known:

• TransSearch: An online bilingual concordance service.
• BridgeTerm: A translation request management software for language services teams and freelancers.
• Portage: A statistical and neural network automatic translation software.
• Terminotix APIs: A suite of linguistic .NET and SOAP APIs (Application Programming Interfaces).

I think I'm gonna buy memo Q.

Andrea I am in the same situation and I would be extremely curious to know what you went for.

On my experience, I found that Memsource worked very well with Mac.

However the licence belonged to the agency and now that I'm thinking of acquiring one for myself, I'd like to choose a reliable one, compatible with Mac and popular among agencies/clients.

A client gave me a few documents (user manuals, lots of repetitions) so that I can craft a quote.
I've been given a copy of a previously translated manual, but it's a physical copy, not digital. If the client accepts the quote I'll OCR these and align them to prepare the TM. Right now I only have a digital file of both originals (the one I need to translate, and the one that was used as the source for the translation that's already done). Is there a way to create a "fake TM" (from the original of the one that's already translated) that allows me to count the content that actually needs to be translated?

Thanks.

Create a fake TM
Open the original source file in your favorite CAT tool
Copy source to target
Confirm and commit the segments to the TM. You now have a TM filled with the sentences of the original, it doesn't matter what's in the target.
Close the original source file
Open the new source file
Run the analysis against the TM populated as above. You'll have the analysis of the new source file with matches from the original source file taken into account.

Don't forget to charge for the time needed to populate the TM, OCR, align, etc. It does take time.

Enjoyed the comment -->"So, I am still on a horse, I like the horse, I think its great and it does what I need it to do"

If you like the horse, use the horse! I can't tell you how many problems I have had in life going for the Ferrari.

As a non-TM software example (but still relevant to translation), Microsoft Word gets worse every year with the new features. They've killed all the things that use to make it fast and efficient, making them more laborious and downright irritating: Spell Check no longer allows you to keep your mouse in the same place to click on "add word" or "replace word" so you end up accepting spelling errors and changing words that you wouldn't otherwise want to change unless you move the mouse each time. I could go on and on.

The horse all the way!

It seems to me I had that same problem a few years ago and I finally had to manually insert the password (an interminable chain of numbers and letters).

However, after several years of no problems, I now get an error message that initialization has failed or some such thing and Babylon doesn't help me. They only send me another link to reinstall the software, but it so happens that I cannot uninstall the former verson because it's apparently been moved. I get another error message saying that that network resource isn't available. I get no reply from Babylon telling me how to uninstall the last versión.
