I have it, but found that it requires a lot of manual adjustment. On the rare occasions when I need to align something, I use LF Aligner. But I never do huge jobs such as yours, so my experience is not that relevant.

Dear all!

I'm struggling to find a Cat tool to translate Excel files that allow the selection of columns to translate with the possibility to see the entire file.

I know that in MemoQ it's possible to select the columns/rows/cells to translate and the output file will only substitute those fields and maintain the rest.

I'd need to know if there's a Cat tool that aside from that, allows the visualization of the pre-translated file.

I hope I've made myself clear enough :)

Hi Heinrich,
What you refer to is exactly why I hadn't used CAT tools before. I've done a lot of contracts, other files with a lot of formatting, and a novel which was from the actual book as the author didn't have it in word form. (That was fun...). It's really only now with this new project that I think the tools will be real time savers, as long as I can figure them out properly.

I think that even with documents with a lot of formatting, any CAT tool can be very handy: it saves time when typing and it can query the internet for suggestions.

I am currently working with Translation Workspace XLIFF Editor and encountered some issues in it. First of all, can anyone help me find if it is possible to just filter the translatable segments of a job, just see the translatable segments and then export them to excel or word? How is it possible to change the view of the software? Thanks.

you can also use the old free version of Xbench.

But the tool I really like the most is AntConc; it's not exactly a term extraction tool, but the word list and, particularly, the "keyness" lists are great to this end, and the [url= [url removed] ]video tutorials[/url] are easy to follow for newcomers to corpus analysis.

For specialized texts, I find that having a baseline like the Brown corpus is invaluable!

I'd like to extract phrases from .doc files. I'm a Trados user, but when I think of manual copying terms from files into the translation memory... it'd take ages!

I own a trilingual WordPress Web Site hosted on my own domain. I would much rather have the translation work not transit through Microsoft Word, as it might add some code to the html pages that lie behind all the text displayed on my web site. So here is what I do when I translate from one language to another:
1. I go to my WordPress Editor.
2. I enter a source language page needing to be translated.
3. I switch from WYSIWYG to html view.
4. I copy and paste the text and its codes into NotePad++, a text editor that does not corrupt the original format of any text I place in it, and that has some very useful properties to help me see exactly what is going on, like distinguishing between content texts and html codes.
5. I save the file providing it with an .html extension and insert it into OmegaT's Source file directory.
6. I translate the file from within OmegaT.
7. Once I am finished, I create the translated document.
8. I then copy the result within the WordPress html editor.

This approach is much easier to do than this list makes it appear, and there are no glitches introduced into the resulting web page on my site.

It works well with SDL Trados Studio project file. It means you can use it for the all file formats which SDL Trados Studio accepts.

From a Word document, it extracts "internal" or "intra-document" fuzzy matches, sentences containing 5 or more common consecutive words, sentences that are subsegments of longer sentences, terms containing at least two or more words and appearing two or more times using stop-word lists, sentences containing two more of such extracted terms, etc.

It works quite well - takes a little tweaking at first to remove common words, but you can save those custom exclusion dictionaries and reuse them, so you'll only have to exclude 'that' 'which' 'will' 'allow', etc. once. You set your minimum word length, your minimum amount of times it's repeated and it'll generate this cloud of words, you can then whittle it down before creating an sdxliff from it that you'll use to populate a glossary - it sounds like a lot of steps, but it's quite painless

It can not extract multiple words (2 words or 3 words pharases).
It sees only 1 word.
