CAT tools, please advise

Hello everybody,

I need your advise. Until now I had Trados available in the translation Office I worked for, but now, as I am working self-contained, I don't have it any more and am currently using the test version of it. Now the issue is, as I am doing translation as additional occupation and not as my main one, I cannot invest too much money for CAT tools. Is there any cheap way to buy Trados, a version with less functionalities or is there maybe a very old version, which is for free? Is there any possibility to open files in trados format with a free CAT tool and then convert them back in trados fomat as they are needed in trados format by customers?

Thank you very much,
BR,
Astrid

I do not think there a version of Trados at cheap price, try Virtaal for opening and convert files.
I think that Trados is very useful software, so its acquisition requires an investment whatever the version.
To open and convert a trados file, try Virtaal.
Thank you in advance and hope to make a small contribution to your concern.

You can try CafeTran in free mode:
Without a license file, the free copy of CafeTran Espresso that you download will run forever — but with the following limitations: You won’t be able to work with TM files that are larger than 1000 TU’s in size (in total), and you will not be able to make use of glossaries that are larger than 500 terms (in total).

A license is 80 €/year.

If you want to stay with Studio, the cheapest way probably is a ProZ group buy, which ProZ arranges from time to time. I cannot quite remember the details on how to do so, but try to search for ProZ group buy or something like that. You should save from 40% or more on the regular price doing this.

There are other cheaper and more user friendly CAT tools out there, though. You could try memoQ or WordFast for instance. I have not tried WordFast myself, since I already have Studio and Dejavu as my main CAT tools, though, but since you only want to use the tool occasionally, you should probably go for something cheaper.

If you by "trados format" mean sdlxliff, it should be no problem.

If you mean a Studio package, you have to unzip it with a zip tool like 7-zip (easiest to change the extension to .zip) and find the target language folder. There should be one or more sdlxliff files there that you can open in other CAT tools.

There is no free version of Trados that you can obtain legally, and besides, the "very old versions" can't open the files that you currently work with.

No, not really, unless you are very computer literate. OmegaT is free, and if you use the Okapi filters, you can deal with a good number of Trados files, but you may need to inform your clients and/or ask them to send you the files in a format that OmegaT (or e.g. demo versions of Wordfast Pro or MemoQ) can open well.

If you have a lot of clients who use SDL Studio, you should not wait but buy the thing. Put up your rates accordingly. This year I have billed already 17 kEuro, and the cost of software is only a small fraction of my expenses, and of course tax deductible. Even my broadband connection costs more than the software.

Since I am a translator for very long time, many firms always offer me with CAT tools that I need not pay for. I generally decline to prevent deviation of my translation skills among many CATs. Searches can give name of CATs you like. I just remind of MateCAT, Across, WordFast etc.

Hello everyone,
I've just started using smartCAT ( ) and I'm pretty happy with its basic functions.
However, I can't find a way to run a match analysis on the texts I've uploaded.
Is it just me or is this function actually missing?

Thanks in advance!

Thank you so much, Mikhail, that's it!
I'm afraid it's not totally reliable, since it counts at least 300 words less than Word does, but that's another story...
Thanks again! :)

Mara, did you properly set up TM&Glossaries? WF Anywhere, as any web-based application, works fine with most modern HTML5/JAVA-enabled browsers, including Safari. Did you try other browsers?
I might have not done it properly but i did take some time looking into the options and found no way to "activate" them so i moved on to trying other web based CAT tools such as the Web SDL Trados and I think that it's simply that the trial versions do not offer this option because this one too had the TM editing blocked. However they at least state that this is during the trial version.

I was looking into the possibility of using MemoQ on the ipad too but I don't think it's at all possible. Or at least not without the prior installation and account setting on a Windows or Mac computer but since I am away from my desktop I have not been able to test that theory. I would love to hear from anyone who's tried this.

When travelling, I am using Teamviewer to connect to my monster at home. This allows me use all my resources and prevents version conflicts. And even better, everything stays on my machine under my control. Teamviewer gives you freedom. I was using SDL Studio 2015 on my Android smartphone – but who really wants to do it. Teamviewer is available for all kind of devices. Check it out, it might be a solution for you.

Translating Help+Manual topics with Smartcat: beta testing

Poster: Pavel Doronin

Hi.
My name is Pavel Doronin, I work at Smartcat. This post is for those translators or technical writers who deals with translation of the Help+Manual files.

Recently, one of our customers asked us about the ability to work with Help+Manual XML topics. In a couple of weeks, we have released a beta version of this feature. Now you can just import your topics and maps to Smartcat and translate them (or assign the tasks to the translator, or even apply machine translation) and then export them back. It supports both the recently released Tidy XML ( ) and traditional XML.

If you work with the documents created with Help+Manual, I would like to ask you for assistance and check out how good the support of the topics is.
I would appreciate any feedback from you: bug reports, feature requests, etc.
For now, we do not have any import settings and the default ones should cover the most cases. However, if you have any ideas (import/excluding of the hidden text or comments, importing conditional text as separate segments, etc.), feel free to share them.

If you want to join beta testing of the H+M topics support, register an account in Smartcat (it's completely free) and send me your registration email as a direct message or to our support team at , asking to enable Help+Manual support in your account.

Post title: word count differencies

Dear Chiara,
Every software has its own algorithm. Usually, the statistics are calculated following these steps:
Text extraction. Different software may or may not extract the text from footers, headers, tables of contents and embedded objects. This affects the total number of words or symbols. For example:
MS Word ignores header text, however it is included in the word count in SDL Trados and Smartcat.
MS Word does not include automatically generated page numbers in its statistics, while SDL Trados does.
MS Word counts the words in the table of contents as separate words, while SDL Trados and Smartcat do not (we believe it makes sense since it’s created automatically based on the titles and subtitles which will be translated anyway, so after the translation is completed, you will just need to update the table of contents).
Text segmentation (splitting the document into sentences). This is not applicable to MS Word. Here, the approach may be different, depending on:
What is considered a “segment” — For example, a line that contains only spaces will not be seen as a segment by both Smartcat and Trados, so the spaces won’t be counted as characters. However in MS Word, they will be considered characters, and included in the statistics.
Which characters (combination of characters, line breaks) are treated as segment delimiters — this may also affect the number of TM matches (in the cases when a Trados TM is used in a Smartcat document or a Smartcat TM is used in a Trados document).
The segments-into-words splitting can also work differently in different software and even different versions of the same software, as each of them utilize different algorithms. The differences may include:
Apostrophes or slashes are not treated as word delimiters in MS Word, unlike Trados and Smartcat (“Student’s Book” counts as 3 words).
Trados 2011 does not consider digits-only segments to be containing any words, while Trados 2007 and MS Word do.
Dashes are treated as delimiters in Trados 2007, but not in the other software.
MS Word counts numbers in numbered lists as separate words, while Trados and Smartcat ignore them.
Various character sequences, such as ________ or ***** are treated as words in MS Word but are not considered to be such by Trados and Smartcat.
PowerPoint statistics are a total mess.
And the list goes on.
Matches and repetitions — if two lines are almost identical and the only difference between them is a number, a tag or a certain kind of character, they will be considered to be repeating. For TM matches it works in a similar way.
